Harry Potter Et la Chambre Des Secrets (Folio Junior) (French Edition)
Average Reviews:

Having read all the books in English, I picked this up to see what I could make of it. It is extremely well-edited; it keeps the important plot points and preserves all the flavor of the original book. Reading it in French, I noticed some subtle (and really adorable) things that I missed in English, simply becuase I had to read more carefully. I kept my dictionary close at hand, but it really is written on the level of, probably, a 9-year-old.

Harry Potter Recorder Songbook (Book Only) Review

Harry Potter Recorder Songbook (Book Only)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my son (8), who is a big Harry Potter fan. I am sure that my son will have no trouble learning the songs once he has learned some basic music concepts.
Pages 2 - 5 have information about recorders and music that come in handy if you have forgotten most of what you learned in grade school. The first songs are Ode to Joy and Alouette (both very easy, intro songs), followed by a complete fingering chart. The rest of the songs are (simplified) songs from the movies (7).
This book is probably not a good idea for complete beginners (to music) or those not willing to take time to look through the first pages. (Which contain all the information one needs to play the songs in the book, nicely condensed.) I would say this book is well suited to older (10+) and/or serious music students. Basically, this is a nice lower level book.

Reading this book wasn't just fun, but it really helped me in my French. I learned more in reading it than I have in all of my classes combined. There are some little changes in it, but that is because of the language difference and my over-reading the English version led me to know its wording too well. Still, that only made it more fun. I'd recommend this to any French student.

Harry Potter and History (Wiley Pop Culture and History Series) Review

Harry Potter and History (Wiley Pop Culture and History Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I enjoyed this book, because it gives you more about Harry's world by exploring the real history that the wizarding world is built on. There are interesting chapters about where bezoars, mandrakes, the Philosopher's Stone, or particular spells and potions came from, and how they were used by Muggles throughout history (and photos of real bezoars and other things that looked like they belonged in Prof. Snape's classroom). The book also uses history to tell you more about wizarding institutions like Hogwarts, the Ministry and Wizengamot, Gringotts, and pureblood elite families like the Malfoys, or groups like the werewolves.
I liked the timeline at the start of the book, comparing Muggle and wizarding history. It's well-written and an amusing read for Potter fans who want to know more about some of the characters and the wizarding world as a whole----sort of like a book version of the "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" theme park.

Learn how the European prosecution of witches led to the Statute of Secrecy, meet the real Nicholas Flamel, see how the Malfoys stack up against Muggle English aristocrats, and compare the history of the wizarding world to real-life history.

Harry Potter Und der Stein der Weisen (German Edition) Review

Harry Potter Und der Stein der Weisen (German Edition)
Average Reviews:

Chances are if your thinking on buying this book in German, you've probably already read the Englsih version, so I won't bog you down with any lengthy opinion on the story itself except to say it is a modern classic, full of mystery and suspense that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
Foreign language versions of English novels are notoriously difficult to translate, largely due to the high number of English words which have no exact translation in say, German or French. But on the whole, this was an exceptionally translated peice, with no major blunders sticking out (the Spanish version is full of them) The most obvious chnage is of "Hermione" to "Hermine" Perhaps Hermione would feel strange to pronounce to a native German speaker, not sure on that one.
A lot of people will tell you Spanish and French are far easier to learn than German. I found German more fun to learn, most people who say it is a difficult, technical language do not know that English and German belong in the same group of languages (Germanic) French, Spanish and Italian are in a completely different group (Romantic) So to brush up on language skills, or just to have fun reading a novel in another language, HP is probably the most fun and easy to understand novel on the market.

Buen libro.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an adult with a reasonable command of Spanish as a second language. I can read a newspaper fairly easily, and I can hold mutually interesting conversations with people, so long as their speech isn't too slangy, to regional, or too fast. I found Potter #5 in spanish translation to be an entertaining way to do some "continued reading". If you're an adult who feels sheepish about reading kid's books, trying to improve or maintain your command of Spanish, this will give you a good excuse.
There's nothing like reading a book like this to make you realize that there's many different kinds of vocabulary. Compared to say, magazines, newspapers, or more technical books, Potter #5 is chock-full of everyday dialogue, human relationships, colloquial expressions, and words having to do with emotional states, facial expressions, noises, and such. Not to mention the more specialized vocabulary, like, "spell", "dungeon", "sorting hat", or "dark arts". I certainly found a good dictionary to be useful.
Although this book is published by a press in Spain, the characters speak a Spanish closer to the Latin American than the iberian variety (e.g, the "y'all" second person plural verb inflection is not used, and "coger" is avoided). This is, I suppose, a reflection of the demographic weight of Latin America vis-a-vis Spain, and, for all I know, is standard practice in one-size-fits all translations. I suspect it is a careful translation, although my Spanish really isn't good enough to tell.
If you think that reading a translation from the English is a poor way to learn about hispanic culture, I would reply that 1) the Potter books are hugely popular in spain, 2) This is a european, not a north american book. whereas we have not a single authentic castle, Spain has hundreds of 'em. And 3) who cares, if it gets you reading spanish?

I bought this book for my boys 7 and 8 as a step up from a movie tunes book that was a little too easy. This book was the right dificulty level making them have to work a little harder for the finished product but not too hard for kids with only 1 year of piano lessons. I took a star away because in my opinion a sheet music book should be made in such a way that the book and pages can be comfortably opened all the way to allow for the book to sit on a music stand without damaging the book. This book has a thick spine and when you open the pages it "cracks the spine" which will eventually cause pages to come loose and fall out. Im probably asking too much for the price point but heck form/function accounts for something

Harry Potter y las reliquias de la muerte (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Spanish Edition) Review

Harry Potter y las reliquias de la muerte (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Spanish Edition)
Average Reviews:

Average Reviews:

...The translators chose idiomatic expressions particular to certain regions of Spanish-speaking countries, when common words would have been satisfactory. As if that was not bad enough, they also chopped up the narrative. This is not an abridged version, but a truncated one, as if they were in a hurry to finish the book or save pages. If Spanish is your second language, be aware that you may not understand some terms. Just skip them and memorize the names of the translators, so you won't buy another book ruined by them.
Yet. . . the story is fascinating and the suspense in the plot is captivating. Even if the Spanish rendition of loses flavor due to poor translation, I was amazed, surprised, thrilled and fascinated all over again, and I was especially overjoyed to share with my daughter the excitement of the conspiracies and the joy of reading.
I just hope that when the fourth and fifth books are translated to Spanish, the Spanish-speaking people will get an un-butchered version.

Harry Potter Golden Snitch Sticker Kit (Miniature Editions Kit) Review

Harry Potter Golden Snitch Sticker Kit (Miniature Editions Kit)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I find it a little dissapointing.
You will find no book here. Only 8 stickers. The four seals of the Four Houses of Hogwarts, the Hogwarts seal, and 3 portraits of Harry, Draco Malfoy and Cedric Diggory (not drawings, the actors). Then, there's the Golden Snitch. The stand where you can put it on is made of solid wood, but the actual ball is (bad) painted plastic, and the wings are also plastic.
I don't recommend this object for small children. They can hurt themselves with the wings (they are very pointy).
I like to collect gadgets from movies, and in the end, this turns out OK put on a shelf, besides the books. But there are better gadgets for Harry Potter fans out there.

Our daughter is a die-hard Harry Potter fan, and she loves this book. She spent quite a bit of time reading and rereading each of the pages, and after she filled in the pages with stickers, there were still plenty of stickers for her to use on other things.
This is frequently the book that she brings with her in the car, and she refers to it all the time when we're reading the novels together. We highly recommend it.

Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage: An Unauthorized Harry Potter Parody Review

Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage: An Unauthorized Harry Potter Parody
Average Reviews:

Reviewed by Kam Aures for RebeccasReads (7/08)
As you can probably discern from the title of the book, "Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage," is a spoof on author J. K. Rowling's ever-popular Harry Potter series of books. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, "Henry Potty and the Pet Rock," this newest book by Valerie Estelle Frankel, chronicles more creative adventures of Henry Potty. In this book, Lord Revolting has divided his soul up into seven Plot Devices and it is up to Henry Potter to find and destroy them. There are many challenges to overcome and creatures to defeat like mimes, extremists, and even the Tooth Fairy. Will he be able to destroy the Plot Devices in time or will he be defeated by a paper shortage?
"Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage" is a silly, hilarious book that is perfect to read when you want to take a break from reality. Travel to Frankel's fantasy world, which is full of outrageous characters and funny story lines, and be prepared for a wild ride! Even with loads of wacky characters and crazy situations the plot flows very smoothly. This relatively short book, at 169 pages, flies by and I read it from cover to cover in one afternoon. It is a perfect summer read and is a great book to take to the beach. However, be prepared for questions if you read the book in a public place! At least three times I got asked, "Does that say `Henry Potty' on the cover?"
The book is very creative and the plays on the original Harry Potter series, as well as on other fairy tales and fantasy characters, are ingenious! I have only read a couple of the books in the Harry Potter series and think that if you are an avid fan you will completely appreciate this parody of the series and will understand all of the humor. Even if you can't stand the original Harry Potter books, I think that you will enjoy this book because of the way it pokes fun at the series. You definitely can't go wrong in choosing Frankel's newest parody!

Unapproved, unendorsed, unofficial, and unstoppableThe devious Lord Revolting has split his soul into seven Plot Devices, from the One Ring to Coloring Book of Doom. Join Henry as he duels unexploded mimes, flying monkeys, telemarketers, and the dreaded Tooth Fairy. It's a race against National Treasures, Legions of Dimness, and Miniclorians, from the Funhouse of Terror to Chickenfeet Academy. Although not as detailed as the prop in the film, this wood or resin copy (it's not metal) is a cool prop for an HP costume and an interesting necklace. I have gotten comments from HP fans and just general people who liked the look. It seems a bit fragile, so I have discouraged a lot of spinning by kids, but you can definitely spin it some and the sand in the hourglass really runs down. It is a fun way to remind you to use your time wisely and has interesting quotes engraved around the edges of the large and medium rings. On the large ring: "I mark the hours every one, nor have I yet outrun the sun". On the medium ring: "My use and value unto you depends on what you have to do". The small ring is blank.
