The Chronicles of BALTRATH: The DARK WIZARDS Review

The Chronicles of BALTRATH: The DARK WIZARDS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the first four chapters of this book, I thought I was reading your run-of-the-mill Sword & Sorcery adventure story. But then suddenly at the end of chapter four the narrative does a 180 degrees that are so shocking and surprising that it boosts this novel into a category of uniqueness that cannot be explained here without giving too much away. All I can say is that the hero is so new, fresh and dynamic that I foresee other authors developing future characters along similar lines. Mark these words here today because after Baltrath many writers will be emulating the genius of Gary Kuyper just as they have done with Tolkien, Burroughs and Howard.
What I further liked about this story is that all the main plot threads are neatly tied off by the end of the book - This is a complete story on its own that doesn't leave you suspended in ignorance whilst waiting for the author to bash out the next one - although I am so impressed with Kuyper's writing that I will definitely be keeping a look out for the rest of the Baltrath chronicles as they arrive.
The book is over 400 pages long and yet in retrospect I realized that not a single word had been written that didn't belong there. No long descriptive passages or incidents to fill up unnecessary space. Chapter one was slightly wordy at times, but as I said, everything written was of utmost importance to the storyline as a whole. In truth, it was something of a roller-coaster ride; first a building of tension and intrigue as we climb to the top, but then non-stop action all the way to the last brilliant page.
The style is easy to read and flows well. The characters are well-developed to such a degree that I literally shed tears when...well that would also be telling too much.
The author has created a world that is - in his own words, "Savage and unpredictable," but even more than this, it is a believable world - It could very well be our own earth a few thousand years ago. Although there are strange creatures and sorcery, nothing is too fantastic or overly incomprehensible. I believe that readers of other genres will also find this novel appealing as the writer bases many of his facts in hard science. In fact, one of the wizard's even states that his magic is merely a form of science that is currently beyond comprehension.
There are no fairies, elves, unicorns or other cute characters in the book, but it does have a powerful dragon entity. Although powerful in physical strength, the great Rava Zool's true strength is his intellect and cunning; his ability to easily manipulate the weak-minded and gullible into doing his will. The way Kuyper has devised and describes this master puppeteers ploys is sheer reading pleasure. Our hero, on the other hand, believes the dragon to be no more dangerous than a winged dinosaur-type creature; a misconception he is hastily forced to revalue.
If you like fantasy - this is a must read.
If you're new to the genre - this is a must read.
If you've never read fantasy - this is a must-read.
If you dislike fantasy - this will change your opinion.

Ten thousand cyclans (years) ago, those who have come to be known as the Dark Wizards fought, defeated and imprisoned the evil Great Dragon, Rava Zool. They were only able to accomplish this major feat by removing the Great Dragon's incredible source of power, his tongue. With the passing of much time, and under the subtle corroding influence of the Great Dragon's remaining power, the Dark Wizards have become divided in their primary purpose and responsibility of keeping Rava Zool incarcerated for all eternity. Now, in order to prevent the impending emancipation of the Great Dragon and the subsequent destruction of all known creation, the few faithful remaining Dark Wizards are obligated to unite their forces with some of Baltrath's most unlikely populace; including the brooding Kithian warrior known as The Son of Zemth.

Harry Potter And Politics: The political matters behind the tale. Revised Edition Review

Harry Potter And Politics: The political matters behind the tale. Revised Edition

I love Harry Potter so I thought this book would be fun and provide some interesting insight. And it might have if it was readable. It was obviously written in another language and translated to English which is fine but no one proofed the book. There are sentences that don't make sense and aren't grammatically correct. But even worse than that, there was no organization or structure to the material. This is by far the worst book I've ever tried to read. Look for something else if you want the politics behind Harry Potter. This book will only frustrate you.

The Harry Potter novels are not only renowned for their huge number of fans worldwide. They found not only approval amongst adults but many critical voices have risen in a sharply against the internationally successful tales from thewizard world.Especially on the internet but as well in printed magazines and newspapers we can read about alleged Satanism in the books. The author of this scholarly book is a political scientist, who lives in Germany. He undergoes a thorough analysis of the seven novels. He comes up with scores of quotations from the original books and poses them in a scholarly context. So the reader can find out about the main subject of the novels: real friendship, racism and how to fight it, tolerance, education and knowledge, love and the nonsense of esotericism. The author can proof how wrong the well known accusations are; and that J.K. Rowling is a truthful supporter of a broad humanistic education fighting intolerance and ignorance. Kück does a careful scrutiny on the Harry Potter books and can prove that Ms Rowling does not promote Satanism.

harry potter is a great kid. He's nice, thoughtful, kind, sweet, brave, smart. . . what else could you want in a kid? And not to mention the complicated plots, good enough for adults, and easy enough for kids. Harry Potter is going to grow up along with the kids, which makes it more fun to continue to read the books, to discover more about this delightful character. There's stuff in these books for everyone. . . quidditch for the sports fans, dragons for animal fans, hermoine for girls, okay, why are you wasting your time here? buy this book!

My title says it all. Pure propaganda, biased rubbish. I would actually be doing my garden a disservice and the poor tree that was killed so it's paper could print this complete and total, biased not worth a second of your time, extremist brainwashed authors waste of time and space, even breathing (note to author:::yes, that means you are taking up my oxygen...that u dont deserve or need).
By now people should know and hold responsible the authors who are against The Harry Potter Series. They claim to be christian, well last time I checked, Catholicism falls under Christianity and the Vatican Praised the HP series giving them the "thumbs up". it's these religious, crazed zealots psycho mothers who do not approve of the Beautifully written, and highly imaginative series by the brilliant JK ROWLING. I feel bad for the children of these women, they have to grow up with "crazy mothers" teaching them the facts of life. I would rather live with the dursleys and have Voldemort as a Neighbor than listen to them and their views!!! 0 stars this ebook gets!!!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third film in a projected seven-part series about an orphaned wizard who attends a school for children who can work magic. Harry Potter was just a baby when his parents were killed by the Dark Lord Voldemort, and in this story, for the first time, Harry comes into contact with a few of his parents' closest friends-including the one who betrayed them to Voldemort.
This study guide will help you discuss the deeper themes of the movie. What does this film say about the relationships between magic and science, prophecy and free will, authority and rebellion, anger and mercy, and darkness and light?

The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost Hero Review

The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost Hero
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When I first heard that Rick Riordan was setting another series in the same universe that he had created for Percy Jackson, I was both excited and a little wary. Excited because I had enjoyed that world and felt it had lots of potential for new adventures; wary because I feared the new series might not meet my expectations and that, if it didn't, it might somehow cast a pall over my affection for the Percy Jackson books. I need not have worried. The Lost Hero, the first book in that new series - the Heroes of Olympus - managed to meet all of my expectations and did so in a style that made me glad Riordan had gone ahead with the idea. While having read the Percy Jackson books is not a pre-requisite for enjoying The Lost Hero, I do think those who have done so will be able to immerse themselves in this world much more quickly and will enjoy the book more than those unfamiliar with Percy's story.
The Lost Hero introduces three new main characters - Jason, who has no memory of his life before page one of the story, Piper, a girl with "kaleidoscope eyes" (all together now - Lucy in the sky-yi with diamonds...) who has the gift of persuading people to give her things and Leo, whose clever and creative hands need to be always busy. As the story begins, the three are part of a group from a school for troubled kids on a field trip to the horseshoe shaped Skywalk that curves out over the Grand Canyon. Since the very existence of this Skywalk in real life kind of freaks me out (seriously, have you seen the pictures of it?), I wasn't particularly surprised when freaky occurrences ensued almost as soon as our new heroes stepped onto it.
Readers are pitched head-first into one of the first forays in a new battle the demi-gods will soon find themselves embroiled in. In short order we learn that the gods have gone silent and that Percy Jackson is missing. Jason, Piper and Leo are all having visions, dreams or reawakened memories, many of which revolve around Hera who, we discover, is being held prisoner. Along with a new Great Prophecy (Seven half-bloods shall answer the call/To storm or fire the world must fall/An oath to keep with a final breath/and foes bear arms to the Doors of Death), a new quest must be undertaken by the trio of newbies to find and free Hera.
I appreciate that Riordan continues to give us both strong female and ethnically diverse characters and that he seems able to hit many of the right notes in depicting teenage language, actions and emotions. For me, he has a knack for making his characters seem real and believable and, in The Lost Hero, he once again succeeds in making me care about them. My sympathy for and interest in the trio builds as details of their lives are revealed in the early chapters of the book (each chapter is told from either Jason, Piper or Leo's third person POV) and by the time they head off on their quest, I'm fully invested in seeing them through their adventures.
One of my favorite aspects of The Lost Hero is the inclusion of Roman mythology with the Greek that was the focus in the Percy Jackson series. I found the discussions of the subtle differences in the gods from one culture to the other really interesting and reading about them made me want to learn more about both.
Lastly, for those dying to know, Percy Jackson definitely plays a role in this series. How significant that role will be remains to be seen. Next up in the series is The Son of Neptune, due in the fall of 2011.
Highly recommended. Riordan has laid the groundwork here for another fun and exciting series and I'm already looking forward to the next book.
