Affiliate Millions: Make a Fortune using Search Marketing on Google and Beyond
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got through this entire book in under an hour. Unless you're looking for the most basic of introductions to online affiliate marketing and pay-per-click advertising, save your money. This book is so basic it can't even be called a primer. Fully half the book is used to describe how to sign up with affiliate programs and create an Adwords account. This book offers no guidance on researching profitable niches or keywords, doesn't even mention an "ad portfolio" or describe why you may (or may not) want to manage your ads with a portfolio approach, and gives the most simplistic formulas for measuring campaign performance. The most sophisticated advice it gives can be summed up in two sentences: "Don't set your daily budget too high; you may lose a lot of money quickly." and "Make sure your campaigns are bringing in more money than you are spending." The final chapter is called "Working At Home: Legal and Tax Requirements." It touches on "starting your own business" topics so lightly that the chapter would have been better left out.

Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody Review

Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am the world's biggest Harry Potter fan, and so when I read an article about this parody in the Chicago Sun-Times I had to get it. What the hell, it's only ten bucks anyway.
I'm so glad I did! It's one of the funniest things I 've ever read. It's not really a parody of a specifc book in the series -- instead, it starts when Barry (Harry) is twenty-two, made incurably lazy by his famous life, and unwilling to leave Wizard school, where everyone caters to his every whim. It's only when he learns that a Hollywood movie is being made out of his life -- and that if the movie suceeds the school will have to close and he'll have to get a real job -- that he is galvanized into action.
What's especially hilarious is seeing the grown up Barry Trotter using magic in ways that any 22 year old guy would if he could -- to meet women, to get out of trouble he got himself into. Also wonderful is the way that Michael Gerber comes up with little bits of magic that are worthy of JK Rowling, except funny... like "Traveling Snuff," something wizards use to fly. Usually with snuff, you see, you stay in the same place and the snuff comes shooting out of your nose... but with magic snuff, IT stays in the same place, and when you sneeze, you go shooting up into the air.
So, if you like Harry Potter, and you like to laugh, do yourself a favor and get this.

Rite Of The Revolution: Adam Weishaupt, the Bavarian Illuminati & the Strange Origins of the New World Order Review

Rite Of The Revolution: Adam Weishaupt, the Bavarian Illuminati and the Strange Origins of the New World Order
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This book is vivid, lively and entertaining. While not for every reader by any means, the reader who enjoys irreverent, unabashed scandal and conspiracy will devour The Rite of the Revolution.
Freemasons, Egyptian sex cults, Jewish mythology, hemp and the founding fathers, Rodgers delivers them all and more.
My only complaint was that the book took on too much. The Rite of the Revolution tackles content enough for two books easily. And my rating for the book would have to be NC-17. But if you feel you are up for it, this book packs a punch. Characters, settings and background are all well researched, so the deeper you like to go down the rabbit hole the more The Rite of the Revolution will scratch your itch.
Definitely a cult classic in the making and an "undiscovered" talent in Rodgers.

Nandi: Nandi & The Renewal Of Serenity Review

Nandi: Nandi and The Renewal Of Serenity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a wonderful fantasy novel that even someone with a mild interest in the realm of fantasy would enjoy. The Egyptian elements were a nice touch that is rarely found in YA fantasy and will also help to perhaps make the reader more curious.
There were some missteps with wording but nothing that I found annoying or distracting. The tale itself held my interest from start to finish. The only thing that kept my review from being 5-star was the font. The font the author chose is one that can be difficult to read, especially for weak eyes. Yes, it goes with the tale but it makes it hard for the reader. The cover is excellent and the author has a wonderful book that should go far.

From the scrolls of ancient Egypt a fable unfolds...CIVILIZATION has been gifted to earth, started in Egypt and now must be protected. However, being born first but in secrecy, Nandi's legacy--the protector of the secrets of civilization (the Oath of Serenity)--has been falsely claimed by an evil half brother she never knew she had... in a bizarre twist of fate, either can unleash it but only one may possess it. In Kemet, many do not believe in Mer Wer, a mystical land hidden in a rainforest of Africa, but it is about to surface quite literally. The urgent 'Calling of Charge' gongs and Mer Wer comes to collect one of its own--the non-believing thirteen-year old named Nandi. She is about to be initiated into an ancient and mystical society to prepare for in the coming fourteen days--just a fortnight--three realities bestowed by her coin (an aged coin that once belonged to her deceased mother) will be confirmed; the Runes are unprecedented, a resurrection from the Nile is possible, and her birth is the 'Promised Legacy' of Egypt. So to Mer Wer she shall go for she is the only one who can renew it honorably. NANDI AND THE RENEWAL OF SERENITY (trilogy) is an epic "sword and sorcery" quest taken by a peasant, two valiant friends, three apprentices and their seer, three heartless villains; a most unexpected ending and lots of mystical touches. Like The Hobbit it includes historical particulars, depicting the period's cultural respect for spirituality and echoes the themes of companionship and resilience of the human spirit when faced with adversity. Also celestial possibilities happen. Unlike so many young-adult fantasy books today that rely on sexual or violent innuendo, this novel offers a more suitable reading experience while bringing hair-raising adventure to the fore.

The Little Boy Story Review

The Little Boy Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Little Boy Story is not a fairy tale for children with happy endings and underlying morals to live by. It is a story about our world, and the people that make it up. The novel starts off with an innocent narration of a young boy trying to find himself in a world he doesn't understand. (The author has already mentioned that this part of the story was based on his own life). But the best part of the story comes after, when forty pages into the novel, the story line changes, and the reader is propelled into another story they probably didn't expect. The main character, Michael Wallen, is almost murdered by a Muslim man who calls himself Giovanni. As the story progresses, Michael Wallen is faced with countless obstacles that test his loyalty and show his true character. The story is truly about people, and the choices they choose to ensure their own survival. It shows Muslim characters in a different light and is set in the Middle East, and has contemporary relevance because its perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is being told from a Muslim perspective Unlike many stories of good and evil, there is no distinction in this novel. There are just people, and as a reader, you are forced to choose a side.
This book shows people as they are and tries to convey a sense of realism to the characters. Not all the motives are fully explained, and not all the character-facets are completely revealed. It is a story of survival, growth and personal acceptance, and aims to change the way we see each other and how we look at ourselves.

On the night of his birthday, Michael Wallen meets a mysterious Middle Eastern visitor determined to kill him. The faceless visitor, Giovanni, retells the story of Jeremy Wallen, a man he claims murdered his children and destroyed his family, a man who Giovanni has set out to kill: Wallen's father.Eluding capture and death, Wallen finds himself running to save his life, halfway across the world through Rome, Jerusalem and Jordan, following whispers of his father's whereabouts. But Giovanni is never too far behind, and unexplainable deaths and dissappearences occur wherever he goes.It isn't until Wallen finally reconciles with his father does he learn the truth: the reasons behind his father's disappearance 20 years before, why Giovanni must not be allowed to live, a powerful secret that must be protected at all costs and the task of murdering a man who he knows nothing about.

Sawdust and Spangles: The Amazing Life of W.C. Coup Review

Sawdust and Spangles: The Amazing Life of W.C. Coup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This picture book biography is based on William Cameron Coup's memoirs; it tells how he began to work for a circus in the early-1850's while he was still in his teens, eventually partnered with P.T. Barnum to create the "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Circus and Hippodrome", and "developed the system of loading circus equipment on railroad cars" so the circus could travel more easily between towns. The authors of this book explain that they end with his opening of the New York Aquarium because he was so proud of this accomplishment even though in actuality, he soon lost ownership of the aquarium. The text is child-friendly beginning with the words, "Many Years Ago In A Tiny Indiana Town, there lived a small boy with big dreams" and ending with, "for W.C. Coup, there was always a bigger dream to be found." The illustrations perfectly capture the magic of a circus with pictures of clowns, a lion tamer who is wearing a tuxedo and sporting a grand mustache, horseback riders performing acrobatics, and some fantastic creatures that might be found in a side show like a "DOG-FACED BOY" and a "BEARDED LADY". Faces of historical people like P.T. Barnum and Abraham Lincoln are recognizable.

Average Reviews:

Pots, Potters, and Models, Volumes 1 and 2 combines Volume 1: Feature Descriptions, Material Culture, and Specialized Analyses (CD-ROM) and Volume 2: Synthesis and Interpretations into a single omnibus trade paperback edition. This highly technical resource is packed cover to cover with the results of archaeological investigations at one portion of the West Branch Site, a dispersed residential settlement along the West Branch of the Santa Cruz River in the Tucson Basin of Arizona. No detail is too small to be noted amid in-depth essays and summaries by a variety of archaeologists. A wealth of charts and graphs and a handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate excavated finds from pottery to ceramic human figurines to floors of former dwellings, estimated dates, statistical data and patterns concerning discoveries, and much more. An accompanying CD-ROM contains document files connected to Volume 1 in .PDF format. Volume 1 largely focuses on presenting the raw data, while Volume 2 is more heavily invested in analyzing and drawing conclusions from the data in Volume 1; the combined omnibus is a valuable reference and research tool for archaeologists, and a welcome addition to college and professional libraries.

This CD-ROM and book present the research at a large, dispersed residential settlement located along the Santa Cruz River occupied during the Rincon phase of the Sedentary period between about A.D. 950 and 1100. One of the most intensively excavated settlements in the Tucson Basin, excavations at the SRI locus provided an opportunity to return to a previously excavated site and contribute new evidence for earlier findings. West Branch has been identified as a community of potters who fabricated arange of painted, plain, and red ware ceramics. The research focused on this notion, exploring how pots were made, the ways in which potters carried out their craft, and models for the production and distribution of ceramic containers.Volume 1, Feature Descriptions, Material Culture, and Specialized Analyses, is provided in CD-ROM format and includes details of fieldwork such as feature descriptions and the descriptive artifactual and subsistence-data reports. Volume 2, Synthesis and Interpretations, presented in book format, offers the results of synthetic and interpretive analyses.

I got this book for my daughter and read it myself, since I wanted to learn more about JKR. Even though I knew some of the facts, that's the first time that I had a chance to read the "whole story".
This book is written in a very simple language and presents all the major events in the life of J.K. Rowling in a way that is readable and interesting for kids.
My daughter enjoyed it very much and even recommended it to her friends, who are also HP fans. In her reading response for school, she wondered what is the best way to organize your writing ideas... Well, this is certainly encouraging. And the sign of good book.

Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard Review

Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, in my opinion, is a landmark book. Zell-Ravenheart has taken the popular fiction and fantasy of today to produce a primer for a good life that will appeal to today's video game youth.
In my youth I was introduced to the principals and ideals taught in this book by Glenda the Good, TikTok, the Tin Woodman and all of L. Frank Baum's characters in the Oz books. Today, it's not so easy to get young people to listen. Using popular images from movies such as Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings the Grimoire presents an astounding amount of educational information in an entertaining way.
It's a combination history book, motivational book, self help book and magickal primer all wrapped up in one.
As mentioned in earlier reviews, I did run into some printing errors. Some of the rune graphics were out of place. They were included as a separate insert sheet that I taped in the back cover. I can only assume that they will be fixed in later printings.
The book is not about Wicca or other pagan paths. One of the other reviews listed this as a problem. I don't believe it is intended to be a lesson in religion. By keeping the religious aspect out of the book, and presenting it in a "Harry Potterish" way it will ease the way for some parents to allow their children to read the book. Remember, some parents believe that any religion except christianity is an evil cult. Many of the "lessons" or "assignments, " some presented as games, will help a young person throughout their life. There are exercises to improve pattern recognition and memory just to mention a few.
This is not a fictional Merlin story. The type of wizard described in this book is achievable. The concepts taught are the same concepts that successful people all over the world have used to become the captains of industry, company presidents and good parents. That's why I purchased copies for both of my grandchildren. (That way they will keep their hands off my copy!)
I cant put it better than Griffin from Lafayette, CA United States did:
I highly recommend this book to both new and old readers alike. It is refreshing to see an author who not only claims the intention to provide an open philosophy that still honors its history and practice, but who succeeds in doing so.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard

Besides the main author, the contributors to this Grimoire read like a "Who's Who" of modern magickians, and include such notables as Raymond Buckland, Raven Grimassi, Amber K, and Donald Michael Kraig, among others. These varying viewpoints and expertise make for a balanced presentation and, like a good school, for an ability to maintain interest levels by having changes of pace and style.Designed as an Apprentice-level program of studies, this book is aimed at the same folks who find Harry Potter so fascinating – those young (and young at heart) people who want to be more in control of their world. It is broken down into seven separate "Courses" – Wizardry, Nature, Practice, Rites, Spectrum Part 1, Spectrum Part 2, and Lore. It further contains a set of appendices – A History of Magick Time Line, The Wizard's Library, Credits and References, and an Index. Each of the Courses is further broken down into six or seven "classes" (a total of 45). Be prepared to put in some serious study time and effort if you want to take advantage of the material herein!Like Hogwarts, this book is arranged and scheduled to take seven years to complete. To the younger reader, I must say that there are good reasons for this, not the least being that one needs to become proficient in the basics before moving on. Many youngsters may be put off by the work expected of them in the early going. Where are the charms? Where are the incantations in mystic languages? Where are the rewards? Well, just like having to finish your veggies before getting dessert; just like needing to learn basic math before moving on to algebra; just like laying a foundation before building a home; you need to acquire the basic knowledge of the magickal world before getting into the "good stuff."As you work your way through this book (and make no mistake, you will work your way through it!), you may find yourself longing for the carefree days of school. The concepts contained within are easy to read, simple to absorb, and consuming to understand. If you think "Apprentice" means easy-to-do, think again. You will find yourself being fed a diet of ideas which may well force you to alter your perception of the universe.Oberon covers everything from creating your magickal tools to planting and caring for a garden (Anyone who doesn't see gardening as a magickal act should consider the transformation of a seed into a plant and on to your table.); from learning to survive in the woods to learning to recognize Elementals. And all of that before he even begins to address the actual practice of magick.Course One, Class One, Lesson Three ("1.I.3: Glossary" to use Oberon's notation system) is a handy glossary of types of Wizards which covers everything from Bards and Cybermancers to Wiccans and Wizards. If there is a description of a magick worker in the English language, it is in this glossary.Scattered throughout this book are tables of correspondences. There are a number of them, arranged in a variety of formats, and covering a wide range of topics. There are also a large number of illustrations, many of them (almost half, in fact) from the fertile mind and hands of Oberon. When he actually begins to discuss working magick, he takes the time to explain how and why it works. He relates it to things that all teens can relate to, and puts it firmly in the realm of things which are able to be done by anyone willing to put in the time and effort. He explains how to set up altars (both indoors and outdoors), how to construct shrines and henges, and other items as well. He includes basic instructions on a wide variety of healing techniques. He adds constant encouragement, in the form of reassurances that practice is required, and not to get discouraged if you don't get immediate results. This book is aimed at the total spectrum of Wizardry (like Hogwarts). It does not just cover the Ceremonial aspects of magick. It covers the spectrum from invoking angels and demons to doing simple divination; from creating planetary talismans to simple remedies for acne; and from alchemy to conjury (stage magic). Reading this book will provide a thorough understanding of Wizardry. Completing the work within this book will provide a thorough mastery of the basics of Wizardry. He divides magick into the colors of the rainbow and more: Meditation (aqua); Healing (blue); Wortcunning (green); Divination (yellow); Conjury (orange); Alchemy (red); Beast Mastery (brown); Cosmology (violet); Mathemagicks (clear); Ceremonial Magick (white); Lore Mastery (grey); and the Black Arts (black). Thus, by adopting tabards or robes of the appropriate color Wizards who follow this system will be able to immediately identify the specialty of those they encounter.Mythology is covered extensively, as are world religious views. While some may question their inclusion in a grimoire, it is vital for the apprentice to understand all that may be encountered in the performance of magick. Because of the vast amount of energy devoted to these topics over the millennia, they have a valid existence on other planes, and the magickian must be prepared to deal with them.As with any competent teacher, Oberon not only expects you to complete the assigned exercises, but also assigns outside reading and independent research. He lets you know early on that there will be both theory and practice involved in progressing through this work, and both are equally important. He makes every effort to balance his opinions and beliefs, which he is careful to identify as such, with the opinions and beliefs of others covering a wide spectrum. For those with limited cash available, he lists many websites where information may be found. Even the most cash-strapped individuals can (and SHOULD) obtain a library card and avail themselves of the resources available there, in the form of internet access, books, magazines, etc.Pagan Times (pagantimesedfor@neogenesis.com.au)

Special Effects: The History and Technique Review

Special Effects: The History and Technique
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WOW! If you have even the smallest interest in special effects, filmmaking, or even general film history, you must own a copy of this brilliant new book - it's amazing!
Though at first I figured `Special Effects: The History and Technique' seemed expensive, I thought I'd give it a try since so few books on this subject are ever published. Also, because I am a film studies lecturer, I need to keep up to date with books that are published on the subject. It turned out to be the BEST BUY I have made in a long time.
The book starts with an `overview if the first 100 years of special effects' and perfectly summarises the first century of the commercial cinema. The author writes about the film pioneers, the formation of the studio system, the coming of sound, the challenge of TV, the changes in society and audiences - all the influences that affected the type of films that were made in each decade. He then gives a summary of the most important effects films of each decade and even includes profiles of important effects directors from Alfred Hitchcock to James Cameron.
Chapter Two teaches you everything you need to know about the basics of cinema technology - like how film and emulsions work, how cameras, lenses and projectors work, the physics of light and color etc. The author then explains the basics of traditional optical work and, with the help of fantastic graphic illustrations (there are hundreds of these thru the book), shows how an optical printer works and details the various bluescreen travelling matte systems and their variations like the Dunning Pomeroy Process and Sodium Vapor travelling mattes. There is a stack of examples and images from many films as well as interviews with people who worked on movies such as Terminator and Superman. The chapter then moves on to the history and science of digital technology - explaining how images are created and manipulated digitally with reference to many modern special effects companies and films.
Chapter 3 looks at models and miniatures. The Chapter explains how traditional models are built and filmed and gives formulas for things like camera speed, model size and scale. Examples from the earliest days until the current time are used. The chapter also explains how different types of miniatures are made and filmed - there's a section on boats and water, one on aircraft and flying and (best of all) one on miniature pyrotechnics. The chapter then explains how models are built in the computer and shows different CG modelling and painting techniques and interviews many masters of the process.
The animation chapter is the best of all. Every form and technique is covered in minute detail - from early cartoons, stop motion, go-motion as well as modern computer assisted cartoons and full 3D animation. There are profiles of films like King Kong and Jurassic Park and interviews with masters like Ray Harryhausen and Phil Tippet.
Chapter 5 covers matte painting from the earliest glass paintings to the latest amazing 3D computer generated environments in films like The Phantom Menace and Titanic.
The next section looks at special effects makeup - showing how to create anything from a scar to a huge animatronic dinosaur. All processes are covered in minute detail with explanations from experts such as Stan Winston and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The chapter ends with a look at digital makeup in films like The Mummy.Chapter 9 looks at physical effects and talks about how to create wind, snow, rain - even fake glass. It also has a fantastic section on guns and explosions which tells you just how it is all done in films such as James Bond and Indiana Jones.
The next chapter was a great surprise - sound effects! I can't think of another fx book that covers this subject - even though the sound of a dinosaur is, of course, as important as what it looks like. The whole process of film sound is explained from recording, mixing and dubbing to sound design with profiles of experts such as Ben Burtt.
The final chapter looks at the future of cinema and special effects and considers formats such as 3D (full coverage of history and technique, IMAX, digital filmmaking and virtual reality.
Finally chapter 10 looks in detail at the effects and techniques of the top 50 effects films of all time- some people might not agree that these are the top 50 films, but those chosen are definitely some of the most important ones. The author details exactly how each film was made and who did what.
There is a good bibiography and a really useful glossary with every complicated film and special effects term explained with amazing clarity.
I cannot fault this book - it is probably as good as a few years at film school or a hundred nights at the movies. Anybody even slightly interested in movies and movie making should have a copy on their shelf - I will definitely recommend it to all my students as one of the few books that is worth buying rather than simply borrowing from a library. I've read my copy from cover to cover twice and will refer to it for years to come.

Frodo & Harry: Understanding Visual Media and Its Impact on Our Lives Review

Frodo and Harry: Understanding Visual Media and Its Impact on Our Lives
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The world has really become acquainted with the names Harry and Frodo. With the upcoming release of the third Harry Potter movie to the much-anticipated release of the final movie in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, we have been inundated with these two characters. Both overcoming evil for the triumph of good, it's easy to understand the attraction to both. But how are we to discern whether these characters, books and movies are moral and present a worldview that is proper for our children?
FRODO & HARRY, co-authored by media experts Ted Baehr and Tom Snyder, compares the fantasy worlds of Frodo and Harry Potter, contrasting the fictional "real world" in The Lord of the Rings with the occult world of Harry Potter. Baehr and Snyder are obviously movie buffs, but they are also Christians who observe culture and are concerned with the way visual media is affecting our world. "Our purpose is to help people of faith and values see and understand the difference between the two movies that have been adapted from the popular literary works," the authors state.
Part one is an analysis comparing and contrasting both movies and their worldviews. They briefly outline each film and discuss the message that each is giving. Although they point out a couple of positive aspects, the authors are extremely critical of Harry Potter, saying that it "attacks Biblical Christianity," and that the stories reflect a "pagan, gnostic, and nominalistic worldview." However, they praise The Lord of the Rings, calling it an "epic story" that "points us toward God and Jesus Christ and toward truth, honor, virtue, and beauty." Discussion questions at the end of each beginning chapter help readers evaluate the books and movies, and their effect on their lives personally.
The second part of the book touches on the spiritual approach we are to take when evaluating entertainment media in order to protect our lives from negative influences. Because the entertainment industry has such an influence over our children, Baehr and Snyder say parents should be concerned. They provide shocking statistics, ways we can pass on our moral and spiritual values to our children and go into detail about how children develop mentally and exactly how they react to certain types of media --- horror films, violence, etc. This section also touches on the history of the Church and its relationship with media and culture. Finally, there are suggestions for discerning readers and parents on how to ask the right questions about Frodo and Harry.
FRODO & HARRY is strongly recommended for those who are interested in pop-culture and how it relates to our spiritual lives, as well as for thoughtful parents who want to learn about the nature of the fantasy genre and the various critical tools necessary to develop an informed judgment about art and entertainment.

There is a war afoot between two fantasy worlds. The feature films based on The Lord of the Rings trilogy has reawakened popular interest in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantastical creatures. Meanwhile, Harry Potter fans devour every installment of J.K. Rowling's best-selling series. While both series have ardent fans and some similarities, is there actually an important difference between the two? How are readers and moviegoers to think about Frodo and Harry? This book contrasts the fantasy worlds of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, showing their very different worldviews. Using Harry and Frodo as a lens to examine media entertainment as a whole, the authors show us how to make wise choices, because there's more at stake than just a book or a movie - it's a way of looking at the world. Discerning readers and thoughtful parents will find this book an eye-opener about what they're being taught through the entertainment they choose.Ted Baehr, an award-winning producer, writer and director, is chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission, a division of Good News Communications, Inc., and serves as the publisher of MOVIEGUIDE: A Family Guide to Movies and Entertainment. Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) Review

Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems this book has received massive amounts of acclaim, but I never heard of it until I decided to watch The Dark Knight. A preview for the movie Twilight came on and mentioned that it was based on the best-selling novel by Stephenie Meyer. Since the preview looked good and I prefer to read books before seeing the movie, I picked up a copy.
Now that you know why I purchased the book, I should also mention that I'm not necessarily the target demographic and haven't been for a few years. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the good YA fantasy fiction book every now and again. (I've been called a perpetual teenager on more than one occasion.)
I'm going to try and keep this review as spoiler-free as possible. In case you haven't already gathered it from other reviews, or the book description itself, Twilight is about a young girl named Bella Swan who moves to Forks, Washington and finds herself in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. The climax of the story happens when a vampire who doesn't abstain from feasting on humans, as the Cullen coven does, decides he wants Bella. Up until this point (first three quarters), the novel progresses at a moderate, but not lagging pace and then instantly picks up.
The book itself is a rather easy read, however, the characters seem somewhat shallow. Bella is supposed to be an honour student, but behaves exactly the opposite. Edward, who has been in existence for more than a hundred years, should be more intelligent and far wiser than is portrayed in his character. Armed with this tidbit about him, Meyer had plenty of room to play around and mold him into so much more, but never truly took that opportunity.
In fact, after finishing the first book (I've read both Twilight and New Moon), I wondered what a century old vampire might find utterly attractive in a seemingly average 17 year old girl, besides the fact that she smelled delectable, could pick out a common tune by Debussy, and had a penchant for identifying the mitotic phases of an onion. Even Bella herself wonders the same thing and makes it plainly obvious by asking almost every other page what this magnificent Adonis can possibly see in her, which became rather tiring.
(On another note, I'm still trying to figure out how any person with dark circles under his eyes and lavender eyelids can be likened to Adonis. It could just be me, but the way Meyer described their features, I couldn't help imagining a well-fed crack fiend half the time.)
While I don't understand how the love between Bella and Edward can be so true and deep as made out in the book, considering they only knew each other for a few months, I can understand how Bella formed such a strong attachment to Edward: he saved her life on more than one occasion and, in a sense, has become her personal Superman. Is this right thinking? Dunno, but I guess constantly saving a girl who can barely walk without tripping does equate to being inexplicably lovable.
By the end of the novel, I realized that Bella's character, though stubborn, was unbelievably insecure--more so than one would expect from the typical teenage girl--and Edward, arrogant as he can be, used this insecurity to his benefit (whether consciously or not), thus causing multiple crises of conscience for "putting [her] in harm's way".
When one really steps back from this novel and looks at the entire scope of it, the true dysfunction of their unhealthy relationship is obviously apparent.
Plus, Meyer's overuse of the word incredulous began grating on my senses, not to mention all the glaring, whining, cringing, grimacing, and her overwhelming need to append a "he said" or "she said" to almost every bit of dialog that transpired. (Surely, even truly young minds are able to keep up with the general flow of dialog). And let's not get started on the editing: You know the editor was asleep at the wheel, or either non-existent, when there's a glaring grammatical error within the first ten pages.
But, despite all of that, I enjoyed the book. Meyer is a wonderful storyteller. There was a cliffhanger at the end of each bite-sized chapter pressing the reader to continue on, if for no other reason than to see who else is glaring or grimacing at whom. The story also had a light-hearted comedic edge which played in its favor.
Rather than feeling as though I were trudging through a heavy piece of fantasy fiction, I was able to let my mind relax and float into the story as if I were watching some strangely intoxicating reality show about a clumsy teenage girl and a thoroughly confused vampire. In the end, despite their flaws and not fully understanding their logic or reasoning, I even enjoyed the characters Meyer created.
This is a novel you should pick up when you just want to shut off your brain for a little while and escape reality. Basically, you shouldn't try to read this novel with too serious an eye. Ideally, it should be read while curled up in your most comfortable outfit eating your favorite snack with the lights dimmed, and television and phone turned off.

Blackrayne Review

The concept of this book -- an unethical psychologist whose birds have come home to roost finding himself embroiled in a powerful cult -- was intriguing to me. I found the character of Jason engaging, if not likable. The plot moved quickly and I found myself embroiled in the story. There were some editing issues, but these were fairly minor.
Then I hit a brick wall. I don't believe in spoilers, and I'm not going to discuss the particulars of how this book ends, but a substantial percentage (yes, I counted) of this book involves page after page of clunky Christian preaching. Not just any old Christian preaching either -- this is the Christianity where folks (especially fornicators and gay folks) burn in endless lakes of fire and God rewards His chosen with earthly prosperity.
Although the preaching is supposedly related to the storyline, the connection is tenuous at best. I found it objectionable for two reasons: First, if I want to read someone's testimony, I will choose to do that by buying one of the many non-fiction Christian books on the market. Second, as a literary device, "God fixes everything" is on a par with "And then I woke up and found it was all a dream." It's a cop-out way to end what started as (and is marketed as) a secular story.
I gave this book two stars (instead of one) because the concept and the first part of the story show that the writer has promise.

J.K. Rowling A Biography Review

J.K. Rowling A Biography

I've read all the HP books and am a big fan so I was pleased to find a good biography of JK Rowling as Marc Shapiro's from last year was too thin and not very enlightening. This one is much more interesting and follows JK's life through from when she was little girl all through her education and the subsequent creation of Harry Potter on a train up to the present day. It's a pleasure to read a good rags to riches story - and in case you've read all those articles about her writing in cafes you can find out here that there is a lot more to JK Rowling than that! I recommend this book if you're a Harry Potter fan, especially if you like the game of spotting where all the inventive names in the books come from - you might not agree with Sean Smith but it's fun to play!

Based on exhaustive research, interviews with those who know her and a penetrating evaluation of the novels, this is the first full-length biography of one of the most important writers in the world today. She is the creator of probably the best-known and certainly the best-loved character in contemporary fiction; she is also the author of her own escape from an existance on the brink of poverty, with no job and few prospects. On the one hand there is J.K. Rowling, who wrote and continues to write, the Harry Potter novels, a literary phenomenon of both the last millenium, and the new one.On the other, there is Joanne Rowling, a quiet, dreamy, rather shy woman whose brilliance in translating her dreams into prose transformed her own life. The author examines the experiences that not only helped to shape J.K. Rowling, but that led in the end, as in all the best fairy tales, to fame and fortune.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
