Looking for God in Harry Potter Review

Looking for God in Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Looking for God in Harry Potter is an updated and improved version of Granger's earlier writing on the subject. Not only is this book up to date with reference to every Potter book Rowling has written, it is also edited in a superior fashion. This book succeeds on a number of fronts: 1) It details the important themes of the Potter books extremely well. This has allowed me to enjoy and appreciate the books much more than when I first helped read Sorcerer's Stone to my son. The Potter stories are great on their own but Looking for God in Harry Potter allows you to see the deep themes Rowling is baking into these stories. I guarantee you will appreciate her writing skill and the books themselves significantly more after reading this guide. 2)This has helped me to reinforce the themes in the Potter books, which are really the great themes we are faced with in life, for my son. It has given me an informed, adult view on Rowling's writing that has created many "teachable moments" with my son.
I consider myself a decent reader but, to be honest, it's amazing how much I missed in Rowling's books that John Granger has captured in great detail. From the themes in each of the Potter books to the hidden meaning of most of the character's names--the detail and analysis will astound you if you are a Potter fan. If you'd like to see a serious treatment of Rowling's world as literature--and benefit from the experience--this is your book.

If you are a Christian reader who has felt a bit guilty in your love (or your children's) for the Potter books I urge you to buy this book. The loud, opposing voices in the Christian media have created a dangerous image for Rowling's stories and you may know people who have warned you not to let Harry Potter into your home. This book gives you the other side of the story and it does it with a great analysis of all the themes. This will help you see why the fears of many people (many of whom have never read a single Harry Potter book) are misplaced. It explains why when you read the books you couldn't see what the negative warnings were all about and indeed, you felt just the opposite.

For the latest edition of this book that covers all 7 Harry Potter novels, see How Harry Cast His Spell.John Granger, a Christian, a teacher of classic literature, and a father of seven children, explores the surprising reasons J. K. Rowling's books are so popular and examines what the author believes are strong Christian themes throughout the Harry Potter books. Granger helps readers understand the classic literary devices used in the Potter books and contends that Rowling is writing in the tradition of Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Are they just a good read, or do they nourish the soul as well?

Re-Reading Harry Potter Review

Re-Reading Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did enjoy parts of this book very much. I'm afraid, though, that it was often for the wrong reasons. At times I suspected that it was an elaborate and extended send-up of academic squabbling over literature. I'm still not quite sure, but I *think* it is serious.
The first chapter 'Book Covers' ("I begin as most readers must, with book covers") contains the delightful story of Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish. Mr Iser proposes an "implied reader" who has a dialectical relationship with the text and who, we are warned, "is not to be identified with any real reader." This concept gives rise to "a series of disagreements." Mr Fish thinks that Mr Iser is "missing the point" and introduces the concept of "interpretive strategies" which make it "questionable whether a particular text can be said to have any discrete and determinative existence at all." Gupta, in a tongue twisting turn of phrase, comments that, "A waspish exchange followed between Iser and Fish." Some unkind people may consider that both Iser and Fish, and possibly also Gupta, have missed the point.
The chapter entitled 'Religious Perspectives' comes to the remarkable conclusion that Christian belief (as he understands it from a study of Richard Abanes book) is just as fanciful as anything in Harry Potter's world, and that both are equally far removed from the real world of the social and political. This gives us an insight into Mr Gupta's world view but, sadly, none into his subject. Perhaps this is because he fails to refer directly to the text under discussion at all in this chapter, but devotes it to a complaint that he feels excluded from the religious debate because he is not religious.
The one chapter that stands head and shoulders above the rest is the one entitled 'Repetition and Progression'. This chapter is based around the insight that the books in the Harry Potter series achieve a rare balance of repeating themes and increasing complexity. It notes how the initial themes are introduced, then elaborated, developed and deepened at each repetition. This is an intriguing chapter and does not seem to fit comfortably with the rest of the book. It is also very brief -only four pages. I would have found it interesting to see this explored in more depth.
For a very much more perceptive and thorough, although less self-consciously academic, analysis of both the literary and religious perspectives I would highly recommend John Granger's book The Hidden Key to Harry Potter.

Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon Review

Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harry, A History is the retelling of a fan's journey that started on a train with the birth of a boy wizard in the mind of JK Rowling. Melissa's book is filled with historical facts and anecdotes that take the reader through the epic tale of the months prior to the release of Deathly Hallows and the fandom's reaction. But unlike many other non-fiction recounts, this book offers so much more.
The book opens with a foreword by JK Rowling herself. Jo allows the reader an inside look at her thoughts on the fan response to Harry Potter. As a huge fan of her writing, I admit I wondered how she felt about the enormous fan following. That inside glance into the mind of this brilliant author is a huge plus to the start of the retelling of the fans' journey.
The news of the last book release starts the first chapter; and the book concludes with a post Deathly Hallows epilogue that leads us to the home of Jo Rowling. Melissa fills Harry, A History full of dates, times and events that chronicle this exciting time period in the Harry Potter fandom. Yet the book doesn't stop there. She's also able to portray the excitement and emotion of the fans, the stress of a community trying to prepare for the climactic moment of this journey and help the rest of the world understand why this series outshines others in the hearts of so many readers. In Harry a History, Melissa is able to capture the intense love fans have for this series and for each other.
There are other extras that make this book very appealing. First, the pages of pictures are an incredible bonus. Pictures of Jo, Fiddy, PotterCasts, fans, conferences and actors just help to enhance the overall feeling. Once you've read this book you don't just understand how and why this fandom has grown to be such a large groups of close knit friends, but you can feel the emotions yourself. Readers are also treated to insights into the mind of Jo Rowling in Melissa's exclusive interview. Melissa still continues to add extras into her Harry, A History website.
Harry Potter fans are a passionate group of people who love literature and have enjoyed this growing community we call fandom. Melissa Anelli's book, Harry, A History, captures the events, excitement and the love that fills the fandom years after the release of the last Harry Potter book.
Harry saved the world with his love. Melissa's retelling of the fan's journey allows the reader to understand how and why that love has spread from the pages of a book into the world of fans.

Mapping the World of Harry Potter Review

Mapping the World of Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

This is probably the most enjoyable of the several different books of essays on the Harry Potter books that I have read. Perhaps it's because the contributors are, themselves, fantasy and sci-fi authors, which may give them a unique insight. Another possibility is that this is also the first collection to cover all of the books through Half-Blood Prince.
As with any compilation of work by several different authors, the quality of the essays is uneven at best. The contributors stretch to come up with original ways to look at the series and, inevitably, they sometimes fail. The ones that fell the flattest, in my view, were "The Proper Wizard's Guide to Good Manners" (Roxanne Longstreet Conrad) and "Harry Potter and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Counselor" (Mercedes Lackey).
At least, however, those two essays were near the end of the book. Throughout my reading, I never changed my view that the first essay, "Harry Potter and the Young Man's Mistake" (Daniel P. Moloney), was the one with the profoundest insight and most thoughtful probing of the pitfalls that Harry faces in his final struggle against Voldemort. Honorable mention also goes to "Harry Potter and the End of Religion" (Marguerite Krause) and "It's All About God" (Elisabeth DeVos), which should be mutually exclusive but, surprisingly, don't seem to be; "Hermione Granger and the Charge of Sexism" (Sarah Zettel), which should (but won't) dispose of that one once and for all; and "Why Killing Harry is the Worst Outcome for Voldemort" (Richard Garfinkle). All in all, a very enjoyable and satisfying read.

Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon

For all the fanfare this book has gotten, I'm not entirely sure all of it is deserved. It is a lovely look back at how the Harry Potter fandom evolved and got to where it is today, but there are some issues I do have with the book. One of the things I noticed was that Melissa told the book like it was a novel, a fictional piece, filled with flowery description that I feel has no place in what is essential a memoir of sorts. The intent of the book is to retell the HP fandom, from start to finish. Melissa pulls this off artfully, but if her intent was to reach the general public, it was not accomplished. From start to finish, this book is full of name-dropping and in-jokes that just another Harry Potter fan would never understand. In this book, the BNFs (Big Name Fans) rule supreme. The other side of the fandom is never shown. It took 90 pages for the first mention of MuggleNet, and all future mentions (of which there were very few and only when absolutely necessary) were cold and snobby. The HPANA is mentioned only once, in the acknowledgements, the Lexicon once, nothing about the humongous controversy, and no mention at all of Veritaserum and other sites out there. The truth is, Melissa fails to mention the side that truly appeals to the general fan. I did not feel, after reading this book, like I was part of the phenomenon, although I know I was, because I read the books, I posted in the communities, I had just as much fun theorizing, but nope, I didn't own a fansite or publish JKR's books, so I clearly don't matter. Probably about 90% of the Harry Potter fans would fall in my boat, not Melissa's. Where is our story? It was a good read, I will not say I disliked it, but I just wish Melissa had shown us the entirety of the HP world, instead of her secluded, high-and-mighty part of it.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition Review

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you love the Harry Potter series, then this is a must-have. It arrived in the mail yesterday, and I devoured it right away. And that's my only complaint: it's brevity. It's a short, quick read. But a fun one.
And it's not simply a handful of fairy tales from the wizarding world. The commentary by Albus Dumbledore on each story was a really nice touch, in some cases even more entertaining to me than the stories themselves.
If you were expecting a thick book that would absorb you for hours as the Harry Potter series did, I hope you're not disappointed in this book's brevity. It's still worth the price if you enjoy the series, and it supports a charitable cause.
If you've never read the Harry Potter books (or seen the movies, I suppose) then do NOT consider this a sample of the series. You will not glean any sense of the depth, quality and, as everyone else calls it, the magic of the Harry Potter world. This book is a tasty dessert to those who've feasted on the seven-course series.

Unauthorized Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows News: Harry Potter Book Seven and Half-Blood Prince Analysis Review

Unauthorized Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows News: Harry Potter Book Seven and Half-Blood Prince Analysis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this e-book after finishing the series again and was wanting a bit more to ponder in anticipation of book 7. It was interesting, though some opinions and analyses ignored passages in the books which contained the information to clearly contradict the stated analysis or opinion.
I guess I was hoping for more concrete information, and perhaps some genuine spoilers. Mostly, this book was just speculation and "educated" guessing. I felt a little let down and wanting something with more substance. It seemed like I was reading a web log or USENET News Group thread (which can be done for free and you get the benefit of interaction with others).
I was also -appalled- at the lack of proofreading. It is clear no one read through this book prior to publishing. Will someone PLEASE PROOF READ THIS BOOK and correct the typos??? It was embarrassing and annoying to read.
Is it worth the $11, maybe. It does collect some interesting thoughts and ideas in one spot. Mr. Zimmerman did put some effort into the original draft and so I don't regret spending the money but it is hard to recommend this work highly.

I purchased this cookbook as well as the other unofficial Harry Potter cookbook (( by a different author)). The $14 isn't worth the price unless you are a Harry Potter fan and just have to have all things with the name Harry Potter on it. Comparing the two books this book has approx. 42 pages of recipes ((the other unofficial book by the another author has 230 pages ))and considering many recipes found in this book are in the other book it just isn't worth the money. The other cookbook is around $11 and has more recipes. There are a few pictures in this book that give an idea how the end result should look but even still, not all recipes have the photos. I appreciate honest reviews and I hesitate to say this, but I'm pretty sure I could have done a better job putting together this cookbook with just my personal computer and printer.

Complete Idiot's Guide to The World of Harry Potter by Tere StoufferWhen I got this book I thought it might just be a recap of the Harry Potter books, all of which I enjoyed immensely. However, to my surprise and delight this is truly a GUIDE, although certainly not written for idiots, despite the catchy name of the series of excellent and informative books! Instead, it holds a wealth of fascinationg knowledge, showing that J.K. Rowling really researched her fantastic stories in minute detail, rather than making it all up. In this guide, which you can use like a dictionary to look up terms you don't understand in the British or archaic language, or which you can enjoy reading straight through and devouring the knowledge of medieval practices, beliefs, cures, spells, and more. You can understand terms used in fairy tales and old English and Celtic lore; increase your vocabulary to include many real words you didn't know; understand references to mythological traditions and floklore; have insight into the beliefs and legends of Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, and Roman gods and traditions. You will learn about many herbs and the actual medicinal practices of ancient times, on which Rowling bases her potions. And, of course, many of the references and situations in the Harry Potter Series are explained and clarified, without ruining the plot of those you haven't yet read. This is a fascinating book to read even if you have not read the Rowling books. I highly recommend it!

LEGO Harry Potter Building the Magical World Review

LEGO Harry Potter Building the Magical World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband is a huge Lego fan, as well as a huge Harry Potter fan. He's been collecting the Lego Harry Potter sets since they came out in 2001. So, when I saw this book, I just had to get it for him.
PROS: The book may as well be called "Lego Harry Potter: A History." It details each individual Lego set (or, in cases such as the Knight Bus, which had two sets, details the sets together) up to the beginning of 2011 and provides interesting tidbits about the designs of the sets and the minifigures that came with them. It also highlights some of the more prolific minifigures, such as Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco. It's really interesting to see how much detail is put into each set, and to see how the designs have improved through the years (The original Ginny minifigure pales in comparison to the newest one, for example). There's a "Behind the Scenes" section in the back that gives a short overview on the team that creates the Legos and on how the sets are designed, and there's a section on the HP Lego Video Game as well. It also includes a timeline of the different Lego HP sets, and a visual listing of all the minifigures. And finally, the book comes with an exclusive Harry minifigure, which appears to be "Yule Ball Harry."
CONS: Because the minifigure is imbedded in the cover of the book, the cover itself is about as thick as the pages for the rest of the book, so it gives the appearance that the book is twice as long as it actually is. The book also doesn't detail the newest Lego Harry Potter sets that were just released (e.g., the Forbidden Forest, the newest Hogwarts Castle set), though it does mention that they're coming out soon at the end of the book and has a large, two-page spread that pictures the sets.
OVERALL: This is definitely a great resource for any Harry Potter Lego collector, and is well worth the $14 we paid for it.

The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter (revised edition) Review

The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter (revised edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an adult Harry Potter fan, and I found this to be an excellent guide to the historical events and figures behind the characters in the books. I learned about the real Nicolas Flamel, for instance, and about many mythological creatures similar to those in the Potter books. Surprisingly, it is a much better guide than the 500-plus page volume, "Beacham's Sourcebook...Exploring Harry Potter" by Elizabeth Schafer. Schafer's book seems at first glance to be a well-researched guide to the ideas and figures behind the series, but I found her analysis and conclusions to be somewhat forced. It strikes the reader as more of an adult reference book than "The Magical Worlds..." does--this one can definitely be enjoyed by young readers-- but Colbert's guide is much more grounded in fact, sticking to explaining who the historical figures were and what events are related to the Potter books. Each chapter is short, explaining one name, creature, or idea. This made it very easy to explore in short stretches, without having to start from the beginning. It doesn't pretend to offer a deep analysis of Rowling's motives or thought process, but does give us the background to further appreciate her work. Think of it as a quick course in mythology and history as related to the Harry Potter books. I find myself referring to it repeatedly, while Schafer's book sits on my shelf. A must-read for any Potter fan interested in learning more about his magical world!

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter Review

Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a fan of the Blue Blog (the author's knitting blog) as well as an avid Harry Potter fan, I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation. A book linking Harry Potter and knitting had to happen sooner or later--knitting pops up all over the books, and is featured in the movies as well. This book is a "best of" of Harry Potter knits featuring designs by Alison Hansel as well as a number of other Harry Potter knit designers. Some are copied from movie scenes, and others are inspired by the books. You can dress from head to toe in your house colors!
Pattern instructions are clear and detailed, and each is accompanied by color photos. Yarn selections range in price, with a number of more affordable yarns like Cascade 220, some Knit Picks yarns and Lion Brand Wool Ease. Details on substituting yarns are also included. Difficulty levels include "First Year," "O.W.L." and "N.E.W.T." (beginning, intermediate and advanced), and there is truly something for everyone here. I have already knit four of these patterns and have been very pleased with the results.
This is a very eclectic group of patterns, ranging from classic sweater designs (such as Harry's red cableknit pullover from the first movie and the gray v-neck house sweaters with house color accents) to more unusual fare, such as Molly Weasley's "technicolor housecoat" cardigan design and a stuffed "Errol" owl. This fits right in with the series. In the wizarding world, there are bound to be some "out there" designs, after all.
The book design is fun and very nicely done. It is an enjoyable read for any HP knitting fan anxiously waiting for the release of the final book! Get ready for those midnight book-release parties, and start knitting yourself a house colors wardrobe with this wonderful book!

Harry Potter: A Pop-Up Book: Based on the Film Phenomenon Review

Harry Potter: A Pop-Up Book: Based on the Film Phenomenon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Harry Potter Pop-Up book is the type of thing that comes along once in a while and reminds you that not all art is found in galleries and museums. Overall, the quality of this book is exceptionally good, something I would not have expected from a book that costs under $50 (let alone the current price of under $20).
At first, I was alarmed by the intricacy of some of the pop-ups, especially the Hogwarts Castle's tall spires and minarets, but the pages all open and close without folding, creasing or anything to cause concern. Truly, this is a remarkable feat of paper-engineering (is that a profession?)
In addition to the main pop-ups, which are stunning, there are numerous extra interactive bits on every page. From invitations, to letters, to small sized pop-ups, this book is filled with wonderful details. The main pop-ups, and the extras on each page, are made of high-quality cardboard.
The text reads easily enough for a child, but is detailed enough for fans to get a tantalizing taste of anything, from a description of how the special effects were done, to stories about the actors themselves.
This is simply a phenomenal book.

The Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy: Hogwarts for Muggles (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series) Review

The Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy: Hogwarts for Muggles (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series)
Average Reviews:

I whipped through this interesting collection of essays in one day. Examining ancient and contemporary philosophy through the lens of pop culture is not a new idea, but it's one I happily snap up whenever I find it.
In any collection with many writers, there are going to be some essays that are a pleasure to read, that reference the theme well (in this case, of the written world of Harry Potter), and are coherent. There are a few of these better writers sprinkled about the book.
However, too many of the essays in this book are not thematically as on-target as I'd like. Some of the writers are densely wordy and stray a bit far away from Harry Potter and Hogwarts, instead pounding the pulpit of their particular philosophical agenda.
It's fair enough that not all philosophers are also good writers. And some readers may prefer more philosophical meat and less of the 'fun of looking at the Wizarding world' elements that I enjoy. So perhaps there is a balance in this book - something for the pop culture fans, and something for people looking more for a philosophy text.
