Harry, A History is the retelling of a fan's journey that started on a train with the birth of a boy wizard in the mind of JK Rowling. Melissa's book is filled with historical facts and anecdotes that take the reader through the epic tale of the months prior to the release of Deathly Hallows and the fandom's reaction. But unlike many other non-fiction recounts, this book offers so much more.
The book opens with a foreword by JK Rowling herself. Jo allows the reader an inside look at her thoughts on the fan response to Harry Potter. As a huge fan of her writing, I admit I wondered how she felt about the enormous fan following. That inside glance into the mind of this brilliant author is a huge plus to the start of the retelling of the fans' journey.
The news of the last book release starts the first chapter; and the book concludes with a post Deathly Hallows epilogue that leads us to the home of Jo Rowling. Melissa fills Harry, A History full of dates, times and events that chronicle this exciting time period in the Harry Potter fandom. Yet the book doesn't stop there. She's also able to portray the excitement and emotion of the fans, the stress of a community trying to prepare for the climactic moment of this journey and help the rest of the world understand why this series outshines others in the hearts of so many readers. In Harry a History, Melissa is able to capture the intense love fans have for this series and for each other.
There are other extras that make this book very appealing. First, the pages of pictures are an incredible bonus. Pictures of Jo, Fiddy, PotterCasts, fans, conferences and actors just help to enhance the overall feeling. Once you've read this book you don't just understand how and why this fandom has grown to be such a large groups of close knit friends, but you can feel the emotions yourself. Readers are also treated to insights into the mind of Jo Rowling in Melissa's exclusive interview. Melissa still continues to add extras into her Harry, A History website.
Harry Potter fans are a passionate group of people who love literature and have enjoyed this growing community we call fandom. Melissa Anelli's book, Harry, A History, captures the events, excitement and the love that fills the fandom years after the release of the last Harry Potter book.
Harry saved the world with his love. Melissa's retelling of the fan's journey allows the reader to understand how and why that love has spread from the pages of a book into the world of fans.
