I work in the mentally handicapped room of an elementary school and we were doing a unit on Harry Potter. The kids were entranced with the story as I read it to them, but they wanted pictures. Does this ever fill the bill!! There is a picture for every major event. The see through pages color beautifully. The publisher suggested markers so the pictures could be placed in a window and look like stained glass. I was going to put mine in a book so I used colored pencils and they turned out great. I recommend this highly. If you want more pictures get the other stained glass coloring book too. I did!

I do not play the alto saxophone. My son is in middle school band and I bought this book for him. When he plays Hedwig's Theme....it takes me back to the first Harry Potter movie. I am so happy I bought this book for him.

I bought this book for my daughter who loves Harry Potter books. She was absolutely thrilled when she was able to draw and trace excotic creatures just like in all the Harry Potter books. Even adults would like this book. Excellent time can be had by all.

Helping young people cope with common psychological problems like depression or anxiety through the popular character of Harry Potter is a great idea, and Dr Julie-Anne Sykley, a psychologist with over 20 years experience, has done a brilliant job of it. The organization of the book is clear and makes for easy referencing. As a guide to some of the deeper issues of the Harry Potter series, or a methodology for practicing psychologists looking for ways to connect with young patients, this book has much to offer.

The Book of Wizardry: The Apprentice's Guide to the Secrets of the Wizards' Guild Review

The Book of Wizardry: The Apprentice's Guide to the Secrets of the Wizards' Guild
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a cute book that has obviously been designed for a young novice in the magical arts, sort of a Harry Potteresque instruction book. It's hard to tell whether this is a serious book on the subject at first, but it does have real magic and techniques for increasing concentration and such, and half of the book is taken up by a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type of novella.
The only annoying thing about it this book is that it mixes fantasy and real magical techniques, but I suppose that might be fun for a younger reader. It's a bit like telling children about Santa Claus, though.
In short, this is a good book for a young adult who is interested in magic and fantasy (and most likely a Harry Potter fan) but doesn't know where to begin, and/or if you want to teach a young adult magical technique but want to do it in a fun way.

Tongue-in-cheek and deliciously droll, "Cornelius Rumstuckle" is the fictional narrator of The Book of Wizardry. Now featuring a new cover, this highly entertaining guide to wizardry makes genuine magical ideas accessible to young adults.

Brennan's fun wizard training manual is filled with interactive activities: how to make a wand and other wizard tools, discover your Wizard's name, switch on Wizard's Power, read the future in the Wizard's Oracle, and more. Those who successfully complete the Wizard's Adventure and crack the code in this book can become an accredited member of the Wizard's Guild.

After reading this book i certainly belive that this book is J. K. Rowling best work yet. Harry Potter has matured and the spells are more intestifying which makes the book alot more intersting to read. while i was reading it i was picturing the scenes and tried to captivate in my mind what the author was trying to prove.
The main idea of this story is Sirius Black escaping from prison and looking for Harry Potter. He just wants to warn him that Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew are after him and they are going to kill him. Then Harry finds out that his dad, Peter, Sir Black, and Professor Lupin were all best friends but turned on each other. Sir Black tries to explain that it was a misunderstanding.
In results to the story, Sir Black was innocent and Harry found out that he was his godfather the whole time they were after him. As a result of Harry and Ron saving Sir Black from execution, Harry received a Firebolt and Ron received an owl from Sir Black.

The Book Lover's Cookbook: Recipes Inspired by Celebrated Works of Literature, and the Passages That Feature Them Review

The Book Lover's Cookbook: Recipes Inspired by Celebrated Works of Literature, and the Passages That Feature Them
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would recommend "The Booklover's Cookbook" as a perfect present for a bookworm who happens to cook (but perhaps not for a cook who happens to read occasionally).
It features 170 recipes with excerpts from various books mentioning that specific food, as well as quotes from authors on writing and books. Some of it seems to be a stretch, but over all the authors did a great job compiling it into this lovely book.
It is very amusing, if anything just to flip through on a slow Saturday afternoon with your friends and reminisce about stories you all read once upon a time (you will definitely hear a lot of "Oh yeah, I remember that book! I read it years ago, when I was in elementary school/just after whats-his-name broke up with me/in college for that horrible lit class/etc, etc"...).
The authors feature a nice variety of different foods spanning eras and book genres - from Ichabod's Slapjacks (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) to Mr. Casabon's Chicken Noodle Soup (Middlemarch) and Tamales (Like Water for Chocolate). Two recipes I was especially tickled by were the Turkish Delight (The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe) and Not Violet, but Blueberry Pie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) - it brought me back to my frustration with Edmund's greediness and of course the excitement shared with Charlie.
"The Booklover's Cookbook" is indeed an endearing book, meant to be shared in order to be truly enjoyed.

Spanish language version of the first pf the phenomenal Harry Potter series. An English lad embarks upon a life of magic and wizardry in a special school dedicated to that end. A fabulous read, it not only holds one's attention, but at the same time greatly enhanced my grasp of Spanish. It serves to entertain while reinforcing Spanish language skills. I recommend it to children of all ages who have any background in Spanish.

The Hunger Games Review

The Hunger Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow. I was barely able to put this book down for a second after the first few pages got me completely hooked. Suzanne Collins narrative here has an immediacy to it that, when combined with the very dramatic life-or-death plot, is incredibly compelling. It's entertaining, and incredibly disturbing all at once. If this was merely a good read, I would have given it 4 stars, but they say great art leaves you changed after you experience it... and this book definitely did that. Suzanne Collins has, with one amazing work, propelled herself onto my top shelf.
Parents, caveat emptor! The storyline is brutal. Even though the writing is geared for young adults, the main characters are teenagers, there's very little physical romance, and the actual violence would probably count as PG-13 nowadays... it's probably one of the most terrifying books I've read in a very long time! Right up there with George R.R. Martin, if not more so. Remember what we learned from Jaws: you don't actually need to SEE the shark in order for it to be terrifying. Sometimes not seeing the shark is even worse.
The story is basically about a teenager who is forced to compete in a 24-man-enter-1-man-leaves event. I don't want to spoil it by saying any more, but if you liked The Running Man, you'll definitely like this. And if you're young enough that you don't remember The Running Man, nor did you get the Thunderdome reference, then I'm just way too old. But take an old fogey's advice and read this book.
Amazon, when can I preorder book 2???

The Lexicon Review

The Lexicon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an avowed Harry Potter fanatic, and I have been looking forward to this book for ages. It is, well, limited in its application. Given that it's arranged alphabetically (and having flipped through it several times it seems complete enough), it assumes that you know exactly what you're looking for, spelling and all. There is NO index, so if I wanted to look for a spell that, say, wrote reviews for amazon.com, I would be stymied unless I had a vague inkling as to how that spell might be, well, spelled. I had hoped that this book would be an substitute for his exhaustive website, and, unfortunately, it is merely a reference book to his website. In addition to the lack of index (which is THE most frustrating omission), off the top of my head, I can think of several things that should have been included and yet are not (and, I assume, would not run afoul of the JKR legal team): family trees; timelines for the novels; listing of who is in what house, both in the present era and in the previous era; and listing of teachers (past and present). These are just off the top of my head. I still think this book very valuable on one level, but it is NOT even marginally a substitute for his excellent website. An index would have induced me to give it another star.

Fablehaven Review

Fablehaven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This starts off as a routine fantasy footprint - two kids, Kendra and Seth, get palmed off on their grandparents for a visit that becomes a lot more than they ever dreamed. As they soon learn, Fablehaven is no ordinary country estate, but a protected area for magical creatures, and their grandfather is the current caretaker. As if that weren't enough, their grandmother has disappeared, and granddad isn't telling the truth about her whereabouts.
But here's where it really gets interesting - Brandon Mull overturns conventional thinking on fairies, and when Seth makes a terrible mistake, the retribution is swift and merciless. At Fablehaven, a giant cow gives enchanted milk that allows the fairies to be seen, naiads frolic in a lake, satyrs drop by for adult parties, and a witch sits in a shack in the forest imprisoned by magical knots.
Soon it's Midsummer Eve, one of the nights when magic reigns free, and when the children break the rules, the aftermath is chilling. As a result of their disobedience, the two children find themselves alone except for a hen, and it's up to them to rescue their grandfather, the housekeeper, and Fablehaven itself, before a powerful demon is released from his prison.
Wildly imaginative, this is a wonderful debut for Mull - may he write many more chapters, and very soon.Amanda Richards, August 29, 2006

For centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite. Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken -- Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good -- powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.

I bought this same calendar for 2009 and did not hesitate to buy it again for 2010. It is well made and the photos are excellent. I particularly like the quality of the hard cover. As a calendar, there is plenty of room to write, there is a monthly section in the back, as well as a previous year and next year calendar.
I will be buying a second 2010 calendar for myself, because I already gave away the first one as a gift.
