It is an anthology of children's reading materials from before 1850 that was compiled for children's literature classes at the college level. It is an excellent overview of the genre, but definately not actually meant for today's children.

The second edition of From Instruction to Delight is a thorough update of Patricia Demers' essential anthology of key works of children's literature from 1000 to 1850. It includes approximately 70 examples of children's literature, ranging from complete and excerpted short stories, verse, and lessons for children, along with critical introductions, headnotes, and original black and white woodcuts.
